Just out of college, Robert Eugene Carlson began working for the Depression-era WPA Federal Writers Project. The Nebraska Federal Writers' Project included Lowry Wimberly, Mari Sandoz, Rudolf Umland, Loren Eiseley, Jim Thompson and Weldon Kees. Carlson had a personal friendship with Fred Christensen and Rudolph Umland.
Robert and his wife, Martha, had a large collection of classical music records and on Saturday nights, members of the Nebraska Writers Project would come over to to listen to music and enjoy libations.
Robert Carlson was a frequent house-sitter for Professor Fred Fling, and he cataloged Fling's home library. The hand-drawn library map and library inventory are in Carlson's vertical file in the Heritage Room Archives. His letters to Rudolph Umland are included in the Heritage Room collection of Umland scrapbooks.
