Historian, scholarly editor and historical consultant. Editor of the University of Nebraska Press edition of The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. J. Franklin Jameson Prize for Outstanding Editorial Achievement (1990) from the American Historical Assocation and other awards for the Journals project. Edited the journals of Chief John Ross of the Cherokees, a National Archives project. Longtime history professor at UNL. His 2018 book The Lewis and Clark Expedition Day by Day offers an accessible and intimate portrait of the journey and its discoveries.
