Barnds was a minister in the Episcopal Church before he became a Bishop in September 1966. He was ordained in the diocese of West Missouri. He had rectorates in Nevada, Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas and Lincoln, Nebraska, North Bend, Indiana and Dallas before moving to Fort Worth in 1968.
