Dempsey, who had a multifaceted 30 year career in law enforcement, was inducted into the Police Officers’ Association of Nebraska Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2007 the Nebraska Police Chiefs Association named him police chief of the year, while he served as Elkhorn's police chief and sought to save the jobs of his officers as Omaha annexed the smaller community that same year. He wrote two non-fiction books on the history of local law enforcement and a law-enforcement based novel.
