Shively has a strong interest in Cather studies and in teaching Cather to students. He taught at Beatrice Public Schools before completing his Ph.D. on Cather at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Shively has completed curriculum guides and author programs for the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association and the Heritage Room at Lincoln City Libraries.
