Furnas arrived in the Nebraska Territory in 1856 and settled in Brownville. He was the founder of Nebraska's first agricultural publication, Nebraska Farmer, and Nebraska Advertiser, a publication dedicated to advertising Nebraska Territory's agricultural potential. Furnas was twice elected to the territorial assembly and served as a colonel in the Civil War. He was the Nebraska's third governor, 1873-1875. He also served as president of the Nebraska State Historical Society, Nebraska State Horticultural Society and the State Board of Education.
His Brownville Home is owned by the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation. The Nebraska State Historical Society holds his papers and created the "Robert W. Furnas Memorial Award" - recognizing outstanding contributions or assistance to the Nebraska State Historical Society in the form of either long-term service or a significant one-time contribution by an individual or organization - in his honor.
