After attending the University of Nebraska, Hassel served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate during the Vietnam War. After the war he worked at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard at Vallejo, CA. He became deeply involved with efforts to save the Mare Island Shipyard, and after it was decommissioned, in work to repurpose and revitalize the Mare Island area. He wrote a Mare Island news column and hosted a weekly "Mare Island Beat" news show on several local radio stations. He also served as Vice President of Touro University.
