Dr. Virtanen was appointed Professor of Romance Languages and Literature at the University of Nebraska in 1954, a position he held until his retirement in 1978. His research focused primarily on French literature, Finnish literature, and comparative literature. His papers are held by the University of Nebraska Archives and Special Collections.
