The first published poet of Nebraska, Dake was one of the first hired professors at the newly-formed University of Nebraska.
Orsamus was part of Abraham Lincoln's inner circle in Lincoln, IL which led to a brief career in Washington D.C. with the Census Bureau.
As an ordained minister in Nebraska, Orsamus founded St. James Episcopal Church in Fremont and was instrumental in helping to establish Brownell Hall in Omaha.
