Kirk moved to Omaha in 1975 to develop arts programs for penitentiary inmates and theater programs for the deaf. Later she served as Associate Director of the Nebraska Arts Council and at Omaha's Metropolitan Arts Council. At the same time, Kirk was the owner of The Kirk Collection, a business dealing in antique fabrics, especially antique quilts, and offering expertise in conservation and restoration. She wrote several books and created DVDs on quilt restoration. She appeared regularly on HGTV’s Simply Quilts.

Later in life, she was the first Executive Director of Omaha's Tri-Faith Initiative.

Omaha journalist Leo Adam Biga has written the best profile of Timmins, titled "Nancy Kirk: Arts maven, author, communicator, entrepreneur, interfaith champion," it appeared in the Omaha publication New Horizons in 2011 and is available on-line through Biga's website.
