Her autobiography describes her early days in a sod house on the Nebraska prairie, a typhoid epidemic in Lincoln, and her education and career as a physician. She was well known as a diagnostician and administrator of tuberculosis hospitals, and was the first woman to hold a number of higher administrative positions in the Public Health Service.
