Crompton was an English Professor at the University of Nebraska for over 35 years. His most significant work at the University was in literary research and writing. His 'Gay Literature' MLA paper (1973) inspired his audience to form the gay and lesbian caucus of the MLA. He also organized at UNL a course on gay issues in 1970.
