Long-time History Professor at the University of Nebraska, James Lee Sellers was the son of Enoch and Emma Sellers, pioneer homesteaders of Lincoln County, Nebraska. He served as Associate Editor of Nebraska History in the early 1930s and on the Executive Board of the Nebraska State Historical Society after 1946, then as President of the Society in 1958-1959.
