Whitford was educated in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her father, Howard Smith, was head of the Animal Husbandry Department at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Whitford began publishing poetry in her retirement years. According to her obituary, "she loved making connections through her poetry with others -- especially mothers of all ages -- and was still giving public readings in her nineties." She is the mother of well-known actor Bradley Whitford.
