The author taught history for some 20 years, mostly at the University of Wyoming before being elected as a Democratic United States Senator from Wyoming in 1958. He was re-elected twice, serving from January 3, 1959, to January 3, 1977. He was defeated in his campaign for re-election in 1976. He later served Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan as the Ambassador to the Organisation of American States. He then worked as a consultant and lobbyist in Washington.
