Eldest daughter of DeWitt and Amanda Syford, Ethel Syford was born on a farm in Lancaster County, Nebraska. She attended public schools and college in Lincoln, Nebraska before moving to New York, then to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Ethel was hired to be a music critic for the Boston Herald. Ethel published many poems and became associate editor of the New England Magazine. Syford then became involved in politics, campaigning for Calvin Coolidge and working for the United States Government. In her retirement years, Ethel returned to Lincoln, Nebraska where she died.
