Ernest Gerrard was born and raised in Columbus, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and has the distinction of being the very first Quarterback for the University of Nebraska Football Team. After graduation, Gerrard moved to New York where he studied literature and psychology at Columbia University in New York City. Gerrard published short stories as well as a play that was published by the Ivy Press, a private printer in Lincoln, Nebraska, but is best known for his book Elizabethan Drama and Dramatists, 1583-1603, which is still in print today. Gerrard moved to his father's native England and spent the rest of his life there, settling at High Tide Cottage in Sussex County. Mr. and Mrs. Gerrard would often return to Nebraska to visit family here. Gerrard's sister Grace was the wife of Roscoe Pound, another Nebraska author.
