Elly Welt is the daughter of former lawyer Harry Haykin of Omaha. Welt returned to school in her 30s and was admitted to and earned a Ph.D. through the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is known for two well-reviewed novels placed with leading publishers, Joanna Reddinghood, 1980 (Random House), and Berlin Wild, 1986 (Viking).
