Educated as a journalist, after World War II, Dorothy worked as assistant historian for the USAF 315th Air Division, at the same time as she assisted at the St. Joseph's orphanage in Tanashi, Japan. Later jobs included a four year stint at KOLN-TV back in Lincoln. She moved to New York City in 1957 and in 1969 she married a Dutch national, Ben Kouwenberg, and soon moved to Amsterdam, Holland. When her husband passed away in 1981, she returned to New York City. She was a long time employee of the American Springer Publishing Company, where she was foreign rights manager and worked on translation agreements with foreign publishers. She is the author of at least two novels.
