Carl Smith of Broken Bow worked for the United States Forest Service for 35 years. He also wrote some books on the history of Thomas, Blaine, and Loup Counties in Nebraska as well as the history of Company M, First Nebraska National Guard Volunteers. He died and is buried in Broken Bow.
