Scherneckau emigrated from Germany and settled in Grand Island, Nebraska. He joined the Nebraska Volunteers in 1862 and served until 1865 in the Volunteers' campaigns in Missouri, Arkansas, and Nebraska Territory. His Civil War diary, written in German, was translated, edited and published in 2007 by James E. Potter of the NSHS and Edith Robbins.

Honors

The Plat where Scherneckau settled in Cross Hollows, Oregon was called Shaniko Plat by the Native Americans because that is how they pronounced his name.
