Karl J. Shapiro

Born 1913-11-10 Baltimore, MD (USA)

Died 2000-06-18
New York City, NY (USA)

Pulitzer Prize winning poet Karl Shapiro taught at the University of Nebraska from 1956 to 1966. Shapiro exerted immense influence on the Nebraska literary community during the ten years he spent in Lincoln. It was Shapiro's presence at the University of Nebraska that brought the young Ted Kooser to Lincoln in 1963.

When Shapiro arrived in Lincoln, he was already a Pulitzer Prize winner, he had won the Jeannette S. Davis prize (1942), the Levinson Prize and the Contemporary Poetry Prize (1943), the Shelley Memorial Prize (1945) and a Guggenheim Fellowship to study in Rome (1945-1946). He had been U.S. "Poet Laureate" --Poet Consultant to the Library of Congress, 1946-1947. Thus distinguished, Shapiro was brought to the University of Nebraska to be the editor of Prairie Schooner. This was at the instigation of Mari Sandoz, according to Sandoz's biographer, Helen Winter Stauffer. Sandoz knew that Lowry Wimberly, Prairie Schooner's founding editor was ill, and she had met Shapiro and been impressed. As an urban creature and as a poet with "radical sympathies" Shapiro did not fit into Lincoln society or the University very comfortably. Shapiro resigned abruptly from the editorship of Prairie Schooner after the university administration forced him to censor a story. He soon left Lincoln.

Shapiro was a deeply learned scholar of modern poetry and a no-nonsense creative spirit. His students greatly valued his editorial skill. Shapiro's students at the University of Nebraska included Ted Kooser and Roy Scheele.

Reviewers have suggested that Shapiro's career after he left Nebraska may have been stunted by his abrasiveness. His novel Edsel, as well as his second volume of autobiography, Reports of My Death (1990) reveal his thoughts about Lincoln. Ted Kooser reviewed Shapiro's autobiography in LJS, April 15, 1990.

We appreciate corrections and additions to our information about authors, but please read the following guidelines and caveats carefully.

  • The Nebraska Authors database is based on publicly available sources. Unless you are the author contacting us in person, it helps us if you cite the source or sources of your information. We cannot include unsourced information in the database.
  • We may be appreciative of information we choose not to include in the publicly available database.
  • To include an image on an author profile, please send jpg attachment to nebraskaauthors@lincoln.ne.gov. A photo-release agreement is required before the image will be published on this site.
  • Because of the way we are staffed, expect corrections or additions to take time, sometimes up to three months.
  • While we initially included some actual links to external URLs in the database, we will in the future no longer provide functioning links. We will instead record the presence of specific external materials in language that we hope will help intelligent users find it themselves. Web rot, in which actual materials remain online but undergo changes in their URLs, is too demanding in terms of staff time for us to hope to keep external links current.
