William Kloefkorn

AKA: Bill

Born 1932-08-12 Attica, KS (USA)

Died 2011-05-19
Lincoln, NE (USA)

Bill Kloefkorn was named Nebraska State Poet by the State Legislature in 1982, and this was then a lifetime appointment to be successor, after a decade long interregnum, to Nebraska Poet Laureate John Neihardt. The name of the office was altered so Neihardt would remain permanent Nebraska Poet Laureate. Kloefkorn was celebrated as State Poet until his death in 2011. He would sometimes remind people that he was also a champion hog caller.

Kloefkorn grew up in a farming family in Attica, Kansas and came to Nebraska in 1962 to teach English at Wesleyan University in Lincoln after college and a stint in the Marine Corps. His accessibility and his understanding of the hard facts of rural life endeared him to Nebraskans. He had a distinguished career, publishing some thirty poetry collections, collections of short stories, and memoirs. He was as gifted a writer of autobiography as he was a poet, with four volumes of memoirs published by the University of Nebraska Press. He took his duties as a public poet seriously, and traveled all over the state to give readings, workshops and seminars. He mentored many students and younger writers. Kloefkorn Elementary school in Lincoln is named after him.

Kloefkorn files include a somewhat annotated bibliography (2009) that remains useful for library visitors. In addition to Kloefkorn files see also files on the Nebraska State Poet debate in 1982 (which came to us from Bernice Slote) and State Poet 2013 (new regime with limited terms for State Poets).

We appreciate corrections and additions to our information about authors, but please read the following guidelines and caveats carefully.

  • The Nebraska Authors database is based on publicly available sources. Unless you are the author contacting us in person, it helps us if you cite the source or sources of your information. We cannot include unsourced information in the database.
  • We may be appreciative of information we choose not to include in the publicly available database.
  • To include an image on an author profile, please send jpg attachment to nebraskaauthors@lincoln.ne.gov. A photo-release agreement is required before the image will be published on this site.
  • Because of the way we are staffed, expect corrections or additions to take time, sometimes up to three months.
  • While we initially included some actual links to external URLs in the database, we will in the future no longer provide functioning links. We will instead record the presence of specific external materials in language that we hope will help intelligent users find it themselves. Web rot, in which actual materials remain online but undergo changes in their URLs, is too demanding in terms of staff time for us to hope to keep external links current.

Please copy, fill out the form below, and email it to NebraskaAuthors@lincoln.ne.gov to suggest a change.
